Bowl-A-Vard Sand Volleyball Rules

Summer League

  1. Team Composition
There are 6 players to a team. Teams consist of 3 men and 3 women. A legal line-up will be allowed with 5 players as long as there is a 3/2 or 2/3 male-female ratio. A team with 4 players can play, but must have at least 1 person of the opposite sex playing. If a team has less than 4 players or not at least 1/3 ratio it is a forfeit.
  2. Games
All Games will be played by rally scoring. Every point will count towards the score. All 3 games will be played to 21 points with the team having a minimum of a 2 point lead. In case of a score not settled at 21, a team must still win by 2 or the first team to 27 regardless if there is a two point difference.

A coin will be flipped and the winner of the flip will get choice of serve or select a side to receive the serve. Also that team will win one free pitcher of beer or soda. Teams will change serve and side after each match. The ball must be served underhand for Rec league or under/over hand for Intermediate League within 5-10 seconds of the referees whistle.

  3. Legal Volley
There will be no sex rules. Any combination of players is a legal volley.
  4. Legal Serve
A ball may now touch the net on a serve. If a ball touches the net on the serve and makes it over it is still a live ball and must be played.
  5. Blocking and Receiving the Serve
Players are allowed to block the serve. One must jump within a foot of the net to be a legal block of the serve. An attempted block serve that is touched, but not hit over will count as 1 hit. Only on an attempted block serve is a block counted towards a hit. Attacking the serve is not allowed. Otherwise a team must bump the first hit when receiving the serve.
  6. Rotation & Tardy Players
Rotation of players is allowed but teams must rotate at the same position. If a team has less than 6 people and the match has started, then the late player can immediately step in at the next point as long as the ratios are kept in place to have a legal team . If they have 6 players, then the late person can rotate in at said spot on next team service.
  7. Timeouts
Each team will be allowed one timeout for one minute during each game. Their will be a maximum of a 2 minute break between games.
  8. Misc Play Rules
There is no center line. A foot fault will only occur if you interfere with the opposing team's play of the ball or completely pass under the net. Players may not make contact with the net or any part of it, including the poles and cables while a point is in play. If contact occurs, the opposing team wins the point. No underhand palm hits will be allowed. This will be called for an illegal hit or a carry. Players may block or set above the net. A double hit when trying to block a hard driven spike is a legal hit as long as it is in the same receiving motion. Players in the back row may not spike or block at the net. There is no 10 foot line in our sand volleyball leagues.
  9. Game Forfeit
A forfeit of the first game will occur if a team does not have the required number of players or the right ratio of players present 5 minutes after scheduled game time or court availability if previous match runs late. Remaining games will be forfeited if a legal line-up is not present 15 minutes after scheduled time or the end of the previous match if it runs late
  10. Legue Standings
Standings will be determined by the total games won. There will be 2 seven week rounds in the 15 week season. Week 15 will be Playoffs, if needed. Otherwise, it will be a “Fun Night”. After the 1st round the wins and losses will be reset to zero. If a team wins both rounds they are the league champion. If two separate teams win a round then a 2 out 3 game playoff will occur. If two teams tie for a round, the first tie-breaker will be season wins and losses before the tie occurred. If still tied a 2 out of 3 game playoff will occur. At the completion of a match, the team captain must see the referee to verify and signoff on the scores. At this point the scores are final. So make sure you look them over carefully. This is your responsibility not ours..
  11. Team Rosters & Waiver Forms
There will be open rosters. This means that each team may bring anyone in to play for them, with one exception. Players on team may not sub for another team in the same league. If a team is found in violation they will forfeit all games that night. A player may play in the adjoining league without penalty. Waiver forms must be completed by everybody before they play. NO EXCEPTIONS. Give the form to Front Counter inside or the referee on duty
  12. Cancellations and Make-ups
Games will be cancelled for inclement weather by 5:00 PM of the scheduled day. Please check out our website www.bowlavard.com for cancellations before 5:00PM. After 5:00 PM calls may be placed to Bowl A Vard for confirmation. Please only team captains, our phones get overloaded with too many calls. Bowl-a-Vard Lanes will try to get a hold of each teams' captain. It is the captain's responsibility of informing the other members of the team.

If a night is cancelled, it will be made up at the end of the season. Anything after two nights of rainouts will not be made up. If league is cancelled in the middle of league play only completed games will count. With the remainder of the games made up at the convenience of both teams as soon as possible. Make-ups will be allowed and scheduled upon agreement of both teams. Our courts are available Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays unless an event is scheduled. Make-ups must be made up no later than 2 weeks after scheduled match or it will be a forfeit.
